Danube – River of Cooperation, an expression often used to emphasize the positive characteristics of this great European river, marks the idea that the future of this region belongs to new criteria and forms of international cooperation – regional gatherings – which are founded on economic, social, and ecological interests, as well as the interests for uninterrupted cultural development of all peoples and individuals – inhabitants of this area.
Considering some common problems in the Danube region, the conferences and the project “Danube – River of Cooperation” have over the years shed light on problems in the field of pollution and protection of the environment, problems of transportation, particularly river transportation, but also common problems of those Danube countries which found themselves in a very difficult economic situation during the transition to the capitalist market. It was pointed out that they faced economic poverty, urgent social problems (unemployment, expansion of poverty, a great number of homeless people, worsening health of the population, etc.), and that the war-torn countries were exposed to even more tremendous problems.
The first part of the book (pp. 9-128) examines the theoretical concept of the project “Danube – River of Cooperation”, in Serbian, with an extended summary in English (pp. 111-128). The second part (pp. 129-289) is in English and presents documentation which shows its evolution as well as the method of implementation and verification through practice.
