Our XII Conference: New Prospects for Regional Cooperation in the Danube-Basin - Needs and Possibilities for Establishment of Cooperation in the Light of Existing Political, Economic and Environmental Factors - discussed the achievements of the earlier conferences and made new project proposals and project-starts. The starting point was the political changes that imposed the need to re-evaluate the former initiatives for establishment of closer regional co-operation in the Danube region and initiate new ones to be based on the latest European experience.
Belgrade, January 31st. International round-table conference, under the title Destructive Impacts on Life and Natural Resources in the Southeast Europe in the Last Decade of the Twentieth Century was organized in cooperation with the Institute of International Politics and Economics. Forty three experts and representatives of NGO-s took part in the conference and gave important contributions to the analysis of various environmental problems, along with a series of initiatives and suggestions for the future work. These included the improvement of environmental education and the expansion of ecological consciousness, along with a broad cooperation of NGO-s. Concerning the use of depleted uranium weapons, the participants concluded that the so called "Balkan syndrome" (also known as "Gulf-war syndrome") moves with those who are handling these munitions and weapons. However, they emphasized the need for an adequate systematic population health assessment, in particular in so called "hot" locations.
2000
Belgrade, November 17th to 19th. Our XI Conference - Revitalization Prospects for the Environment and Economy of the River Danube and the Danube Region - took up issues from Pančevo (the state of natural resources, recovery and protection; urban impacts and health aspects - see below). But, also: economical recovery and sustainable development; legal, political and informational issues. In fact, we believe that the key is a multidisciplinary approach to these problems. This is emphasized also in the Declaration of the conference.
