Perspectives of Inter-Balkan Linguistic Integrations by Predrag Mutavdić [1] abstract of article presented at the XII International Conference "Danube - River of Cooperation" (October, 11-14 2001) and published in Danubius 1-2/2001 |

Even though there has been a symbiosis among Balkan nations for centuries, they have not succeeded yet to get to know each other nor to bring their languages closer. A quite minor number of people is fluent in two Balkan languages and rare are those who speak three or more. Besides, it has been noticed that Balkan nations so far have promoted inadequately themselves, their countries, culture and languages not only in world dimensions but also in the Balkans (the only exception in this sence could be Greek). Therefore I am of the opinion that it would be most desirably to organize a common Interbalkan Linguistic Center, together with its branch offices in every Balkan state (including also Hungary and Turkey as regional-boundary areas), with the purpose of mutual strengthening of interests for learning Balkan languages, culture, history and civilization of the neighbouring people. This center should enable to be overcome all sorts of conflicts and misunderstandings among the nations, to offer a hand of reconciliation and would strengthen Balkan cooperation both in general and in particular terms. |
