Construction of the HPP "Ðerdap I" increased water level in the Danube River. It generated more rapid infiltration into the riparian land, which intensified the process of salting and alkalization of the soil. In addition, the salting was accelerated due to a change of salt content in the Danube River. In order to investigate the land degradation caused by the salting, a network of piezometers was formed. A monitoring of the groundwater table fluctuations and sampling for chemical analyses were carried on from spring to fall through a rather extensive number of years. This paper describes the results of the investigation related to the system soil-water-plant and points out to a possibility that the quality of the alluvial land could be affected by salting. |
